Our Eco Church Mission

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Bronze Eco Church Award!

As Christians we are taught to love all of God’s creatures and there are a multitude of things we can do to improve the eco friendliness of our wonderful Cathedral and the areas surrounding it.

That’s why we have put Eco Church at the centre of our mission. Eco Church was created by A Rocha UK, with the ambition to inspire and assist churches in embedding creation care throughout the whole of church life. There are three levels of the Eco Church Award – Bronze, Silver, and Gold. To achieve these, you first take part in a survey exploring all aspects of church life. Depending on these results you gain points to take you all the way to an Eco Church Gold Award.

We are delighted to announce we have achieved our Bronze Award and are now focused on our Silver Award with the help of our wonderful team who have been planning our next steps to make sure our impact is a positive one.

This has started with the introduction of eco friendly cleaning products across the building by Tersano and the promise to reduce our waste across the building.

As well as taking positive actions inside, we are lucky enough to have beautiful outdoor spaces which can be utilised to bring more wildlife in to the heart of our city. Patrick, Caretaker and Events Assistant, has been working with our new volunteer gardening team to introduce wildflower beds and green roofs to encourage beneficial insects and birds, as well as providing lovely surroundings for our human visitors.

1554 Coffee Shop and Gift Shop is also working hard to reduce their food and cleaning waste. They have put out beautiful flower boxes to help improve our bee population (we may have more exciting bee related news soon).

We know we still have a long way to go to achieve the Gold Award but the whole team are working together on their own little parts of the journey. There is always room for more help so if you’d like to get involved in making our city a little greener why not volunteer with us!
