Introducing James Mitchell ..

We are delighted to announce James Mitchell will be joining the Sheffield Cathedral team as Cathedral Organist and Head of Keyboard Studies.

The work to build the cathedral’s music department and take music education into schools across the Diocese, beginning in September, continues with the appointment of James Mitchell as Cathedral Organist and Head of Keyboard Studies. We’d like to thank Cathedral Music Trust for supporting this role and our vision.

James will join us in August taking the lead on keyboard tuition and supporting our new Director of Music and School Singing Programme Tom Daggett in developing links with schools to bring Cathedral music to young people. James will also lead on plans for a new Cathedral organ!

Read his Bio below and you’ll see why we think he’s the perfect fit:

'James comes to Sheffield having been Sub-Organist of Gloucester Cathedral for the past two years. He has a passion for contemporary music of all styles and bringing organ music to new audiences in particular. He has previously collaborated with composer and YouTuber David Bruce as part of his '5 Composers 1 Theme' YouTube series and has worked with non-classical musicians including Jethro Tull, US-based producer Courtney Swain and the UK producer Ratljost. He is also an author. His book 'The Pipe Organ: A Composer's Guide' has recently been published by Oxford University Press.'
